Travel Info/ Getting to Bhutan

KNOW BEFORE YOU GO

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS | PASSPORTS & VISAS

Getting your Bhutan visa or permit is quick and easy with Happy Tashi Journeys. We take care of all the details, so you can enjoy a stress-free start to your Bhutan adventure. As for all international travel, the visitor to Bhutan is required to be in possession of a valid passport (minimum 6 months from date of departure) and visa.

As part of the visa process, you will need to pay:
  • Sustainable Development Fee (SDF): US$100 per day per adult (concessionary rates apply for children).
  • Visa Application Fee: A one-time, non-refundable fee of US$40.
  • Visitors who intend to travel to or through India before or after Bhutan are advised to apply for a multiple entry visa.
  • Each visitor should carry photocopies of the bio-data page of the traveller’s passport  and a print of the visa letter that is sent in order to facilitate obtaining an entry into the country. The actual visa will be stamped onto the passport on arrival in Bhutan.

WHAT TO PACK

Casual, comfortable, wash and wear clothing is most useful. Please dress modestly and respectfully

especially if you are planning a visit to the monasteries, Dzongs and other religious institutions. Long pants and long-sleeved tops should be worn when visiting such places. As a mark of respect, be kind enough to remove your hats, caps etc. as you enter religious and administrative premises, institutions and in any other place that you come across with the national flag being raised. Most hotels offer quick laundry turnaround, usually within a few hours. It is certainly not necessary to bring a separate change of clothing for each day and evening, and it is recommended that you keep luggage to a minimum for your own comfort and ease of transport, especially if you are using light aircraft transfers.

Here is a guideline list of important items to bring:
  • Good comfortable walking shoes
  • Wide brimmed hat
  • Personal toiletries, sun barrier creams and lip creams
  • Sunglasses
  • Cotton socks and warm socks in winter (Nov – March)
  • Any special medicines, especially anti malaria prophylactics (if travelling through India or high risk countries)
  • Shower-proof rain jacket/windbreaker.
  • Fleece (1 thin and 1 thick at least in the winter)
  • Down jacket in the winter
  • Thermal layer in the winter
  • Gloves, muffler and woollen hats in the winter
  • Insect repellent
  • Small torch
